Tribute to a Dog
It was one of those pitch black moonless nights. A noise cut through the dark, so sharp, so piercing. Unmistakably an animal in distress. The few times I heard it, it put chills down my spine! Yet when I went outside to look for it, the sound had vanished and my eyes couldn’t make out anything in the black cold water. I assumed it made it to the nearby shore.
Two days later the corpse of a dog or coyote floated by. The sound, the helplessness and the guilt will stay with me.
